Self Awareness vs Self Control
Lead with Self Awareness

Hey friends!
Feels good to be writing this. I took a couple of weeks off from writing the newsletter because:
A. I’ve been working on some big things
B. I needed something juicy to bring you!
C. I finally finished the 7 day challenge that I’m releasing in todays edition (link at the bottom of the page)
I recently attended a Men’s Retreat last weekend and it was one of the most life altering weekends of my life.
I not only connected with a small group of men in a way that I hadn’t experienced before, but I also watched as layers of old conditioning melted away inside of me.
Going into the retreat I knew in my heart that some big changes were on the horizon and YET I still had pre-conceived notions bubbling up in my mind:
I hope I can connect with these guys
I hope they like me
This better be worth it
What if I don’t like them?
What if this is a waste of money?
Blah, blah, blah!
Then I got to considering, what if I just relax?
What if I simply just start to notice the crazy, unfounded thoughts that are going on inside of my mind?
What if I just let them chatter and move through me like a storm cloud passing through an endless sky?
What if I just CHILL OUT?
So much of “Self Control” happens when we actually have SELF AWARENESS.
The more we’re able to Relax and Release the negative chatter instead of pushing it away or wallowing in it like a pig in a mud pit, the faster that the thoughts & emotions NATURALLY settle down on their own.
Think of a clear stream that gets muddied when you stir it up with a stick. You don’t make it less muddy by stirring it more (repressing or wallowing) right?
You step back, give it some space and LEAVE IT ALONE.
Our minds work the same way. Becoming self aware just means to start to notice when you get disturbed inside.
The more often you start to notice this and not try to instantly fix it, the more spacial awareness you’re creating around the inner turbulence.
The more space you have, the more CHOICE you have. The more CHOICE you have, the more FREEDOM you have.
When the thoughts and beliefs you hold inside start to have the space of your awareness around them, they start to unhook from your emotional body.
Once this happens, you start becoming more proactive about seeing solutions and choosing which thoughts you pay attention to and invest in instead of being a slave of old patterns that keep rearing their ugly heads.
So next time you notice pesky annoyance, irritation, anger etc, instead of trying to get rid of it, GET CURIOUS about it and start training yourself to look at it as a WIN and an OPPORTUNITY to take control of your inner state and solve an old pattern.
Ask the following questions in these moments:
What’s the problem?
How am I creating this negative emotion inside of me?
What is this negative emotion trying to teach me so that when I learn the lesson, I can let it go permanently?
Finally, what do I want to feel/think instead? What do I want to replace this situation/negative emotion & belief with?
With these questions we’re not calling these patterns “wrong” or “bad” we’re just looking at them objectively and creating awareness around their meaning.
We’re turning them into the most useful tools for the next step in our evolution.
Recommendation: TRY IT every day for a week and let me know how it goes. I guarantee you’ll glean some massive insights if you do. :)
