Writing: The Frontier of the Subconscious Mind
The Fundamentals of Change (Part 3)
WRITING: Some people love it. Some people have zero interest in it.
If you’re the latter it’s ok. There’s still hope for you!
My guess is that sometime in the past you probably had someone tell you that you suck at it and you accidentally believed them.
Or perhaps you were forced to do it by your 6th grade english teacher who gave you detention for writing love notes to your crush instead of writing a 10 page essay on something you didn’t give two shits about.
It happens. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s my intention today to not only show you the benefits of journaling and asking the right questions via writing, but to help you fall in love with getting to know yourself through writing.
If you’re still not interested don’t worry, there are plenty of other ways to get to know yourself. I’d strongly encourage you to experiment with it though since it can have massive benefits towards sorting out any confusion within yourself.
Ok ready? Good!
Let’s dive in!
I’ve always had a knack for writing, but like you, that damn 6th grade teacher sorta fucked it up for me temporarily.
I was:
Writing about things I had no interest in.
Reading books I would prefer to light on fire.
Learning about pronouns and predicates and adverbs and blah blah blah.
I couldn’t wait for it to end. 😭
Fortunately, I found the love for writing again and it has had a profound impact on my growth.
The truth is that writing, when approached usefully, is a gateway to your unconscious self, which is the part of you that runs the show behind the scenes.
If left unconscious, your life will have a tendency to run on auto pilot and you’ll be hard pressed to consciously change the thoughts, words and actions which create your life circumstances.
Once you become conscious of the fragmented pieces of yourself through the help of writing, you’ll find it much easier to stay on task and unravel many of the habits that have held you back.
In short, it’s a great tool for becoming intentional about where you want to go and sorting out what’s holding you back.
The following strategies are three ways I like to write to bring the most out of who I am and more importantly slice away who I’m not:
Imagining
Use your imagination to write about the way you want your life to look. Allow yourself to go WILD. There is no right or wrong here.
Get detailed and vivid with it. Feel yourself there as you write the words. That is the key piece. FEELING. If you want to change your subconscious you have to feel your way into new patterns of thinking.
What is your dream job, relationship, living situation, friendships, amount of money you make? How much free time do you have? What does your house/environment look like?
Get really clear on what it is that you want. This will help evoke the emotion of it.
Use “I Am” statements to start to embody that feeling.
Gratitude
This is a common one, but what are you thankful for NOW?
This can be as simple as, friendships, the smell of a flower, the air in your lungs, your eyesight, the roof over your head etc.
Don’t just make a list, again, go into the feeling. Get detailed. The more detailed you get, the more you evoke the feeling.
Feel the energy behind the gratitude. Once you’re in an open, resourceful state of mind/emotion, finding solutions to problems that you might have become much easier.
Ask Yourself Questions
Write to your subconscious self or what I call my “Godself”.
We have all of the answers inside of us already. We inherently know what direction we’re supposed to go in if we would only listen.
This is an amazing way to tap into your intuition and find the answers within.
Often times when we seek outside guidance it is just a re affirming and removal of confusion around what we already know.
Use this method in a Q & A format to find the depth of answer that you’re looking for.
Ex - What am I passionate about? How do I remove myself from the job I dislike? How can I make someones day better today? Why does X belief keep coming up in X situation and where did it come from?
Just see what answers arise. Don’t “Try to figure them out”. We’re allowing your Godself (Subconscious) to answer.
You’ll know it’s the right answer because it will “ring true” inside as a kind of internal yes or pleasant feeling in your body/gut/heart area. That’s how you know you’re on the right track.
The same thing feeling will come about when you use the gratitude or future life imagining methods.
Bonus:
There are other methods of writing you can use to help gain clarity in your life like writing down the most important to-do’s for the day/week or writing down belief patterns that you want to remove and questioning their validity, but I wanted to just give you a few here that you can test out for yourself without shoveling too much on your plate.
Pro Tip: Use whichever methods work the best FOR YOU.
Remember, this always comes back to YOU.
You are your own master. You are your own authority.
If something feels off or doesn’t fully align with your truth, then move in the direction that does.
Don’t believe me, or the another guru, or your mom, or your friend.
It needs to be proven true or false for yourself.
That’s what this whole journey is about.
TRUSTING YOURSELF
So, step into who you are.
It feels SO GOOD and you deserve to live the life of your dreams.
And lastly, remember to HAVE FUN with this process. You’re tapping into your infinite wisdom here!
